Hot water heater leaking calls for some repair skills but you have absolutely nothing to fear. You can actually fix them easily but you have to be aware of what caused them. The first step you need to take is to check whether it is actually a leak.
Sometimes, condensation may build up around the water heater as it stores and heats water so it may cause a bit of water to drip to the ground. After this, you have to consider draining the valve. If it seems like your drain valve is causing the leak, you just need to use a wrench to screw it tightly.
The leak coming from your water heater may also be a sign that its tank already needs replacement. Even tanks that offer resistance against corrosion will eventually develop leaks because they store water all the time.
If the tank seems intact, you should also check out if some the pipes of your water heater are leaking. Find the fitting where the water comes from and tighten it. If the hot water heater leaking does not stop, you may need to buy a new fitting and install it to your heating system.

A leaking water heater can cost you thousands of dollars so you have to fix it as soon as possible. After determining the source of the link, you can take some steps to ensure that the leak will not cause further damage.
First, turn off the power or the shutoff valve on the gas line connected to the tank. Look for a round knob at the right-hand side of the tank and turn it clockwise. Be careful not to over-tighten the knob because it might break off when you apply too much pressure to it.
If water continues flowing into the tank even after you turned the knob, you have to check your water meter. Look inside the box and find the valve located closes to your street.
You can tighten this small valve with the use of pliers but turning it may require a meter key in some cases. Connect a garden hose to the tank until you have completely drained it. This step will prevent the leak from causing further damage. Screw the hose into the drain at the bottom of your heating systems tank.
After doing these steps, you can already contact a plumber and ask him to inspect your heater.
